Chinese Language & Culture

The short-term course of “Basic Chinese Language & Culture” School of International Education of Anhui Medical University lasts three months, it comprises basic Chinese Language & Culture, and will be conducted by instructors with rich experience. There will be 24 classes of basic Chinese language totaling 72 credit hours and 12 classes of Chinese culture totaling 36 credit hours.

The project is a new blended short-term online Chinese teaching project launched by the School of International Education of Anhui Medical University, conducted online in both Chinese and English. It combines fine-designed online classes with real-time online interactions to provide participants with the best learning resources and experience, stimulating their interest in learning Chinese, promoting their knowledge in Chinese Culture and Cross-Cultural communication competence.

Chinese Language (Introduction & Objectives)

Beginners or primary level learners of Chinese.

Conducted online via DingTalk APP.

The short-term course of “Basic Chinese Language Course” is planned to arrange as follows:

Participants to the short-term course shall attend classes on time. It is unacceptable to arrive late or to leave class early or absent. Participants who are unable to attend a class shall notify their instructors. Participants meet the minimum course attendance requirement of 80% are considered to be in full attendance, those with less than 10% attendance are considered to have failed the course and will not be issued a certificate of completion.

According to the latest requirements in the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (hereinafter the “Grading Standards”) released by the State Language Commission under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, learners shall, after 3-month Chinese learning, master about 300 commonly used Chinese characters, possess basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, able to communicate briefly or respond to dialogs on familiar daily topics and complete basic social communication.

Listening

The participants can: complete communicative tasks involving everyday topics, including personal information, daily life, food, transport, hobbies, etc.; conduct simple conversations (within 80 words) using words or single sentences; pronounce correctly and clearly; understand basic communicative messages through pictures, objects and other aids.

Speaking

The participants can: grasp syllables involved in level 1 of quantitative criteria and pronounce correctly; use the vocabulary and grammar they have mastered to express and communicate on relevant topics; respond to dialogs verbally using words or common single sentences.

Reading

The participants can: accurately recognize and read the syllables, Chinese characters and vocabulary involved in level 1 of quantitative criteria; read and understand around 200 words of content and language materials covering task topic with the help of pictures, Pinyin, etc.

Writing

The participants understand Chinese characters’ strokes, stroke orders, and the most common punctuation marks, able to write a 200-word short essay using simple words and common single sentences.

Class Scale

A small-class system is adopted with not more than 20 students in each class.

Course Plan

With the aim of developing students’ communicative competence in Chinese, this 3-month (12-week) online course in basic Chinese language is offered twice a week, with 3 class periods each time, for a total of 72 credit hours.

The classes will be conducted by instructors adopting communicative and student-centered approaches and task-based teaching methods. Designed to develop students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, the classes combine structure, semantics, pragmatics and culture to facilitate students to understand basic communication topics related to daily life and develop simple and basic communicative skills, organize simple basic sentences and communicate with others on familiar topics, and develop basic ability to improve communication effect by means of stress, pause, intonation or body language.

Supporting Teaching Materials and Teaching Resources

Teaching Materials: It’s planned to compile courseware integrating various teaching materials. Teaching Resources: Primary Core Chinese Grammar developed by School of International Education of Anhui Medical University.

Learning Assessment

The learning assessment will reflect the learning attitudes and learning results of each student. The students of this basic Chinese language course will be assessed based on final written exam, oral test, assignments and attendance, accounting for 50%, 20%, 20% and 10%, respectively, in the final results. Students qualified in the assessment will be issued a completion certificate of the short-term course of “Basic Chinese Language and Culture”.

Teaching Requirements

 

  • The instructors of basic Chinese language must have solid basic theories and knowledge of Chinese language and literature, good communication skills in foreign languages, understand the methods and techniques of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, possess basic knowledge of Chinese culture and China, and understand the main differences and similarities between Chinese and foreign cultures and the methods of cross-cultural communication.
  • The short-term course of “Basic Chinese Language and Culture” will be conducted bilingually in Chinese and English. And Chinese will be the same speed as Chinese teaching in the lower grades of primary school.
  • The instructors of basic Chinese language shall pay attention to the teaching objects, and adjust the teaching methods and teaching progress based on the dynamic learning process of students.
  • The instructors of basic Chinese language shall assign corresponding written, listening and speaking assignments after each class. The instructors shall timely review the assignments submitted by students, provide feedback and make records as supporting materials for learning assessment.
  • The instructors of basic Chinese language shall prepare for the lessons uniformly, make teaching schedule in advance and submit it to the teaching department for approval, and prepare unified courseware with the logo of Anhui Medical University.
  • The instructors of basic Chinese language shall make full use of the Chinese teaching platform to impart knowledge, develop students’ communicative skills, spread Chinese culture, and help students better understand and appreciate diverse cultures.
  • The instructors shall not teach or disseminate contents unrelated to the teaching objectives or tasks in classes, or display audio or video materials that are not directly related to the class contents.
  • Participants shall strictly abide by Chinese laws as well as regulations of Anhui Medical University during online and offline classes.

Chinese Culture (Introduction & Objectives)

With the increasing economic globalization, international cultural exchanges are becoming more frequent. Courses on a brief introduction to China have become a must for foreign students before studying in China. It is also necessary to show the bright civilization and splendid culture of China to the world to strengthen international cultural exchange. After a 3-month (36 credit hours) of theoretical learning and thematic lecture learning, participants will gain a basic understanding of China, Chinese culture and customs. The courses involve different topics and scene simulation, and are designed to enhance participants’ critical thinking and cultural communication skills.

Course Plan

This 3-month (12-week) online course in Chinese culture is offered once a week, with 3 class periods each time, for a total of 36 credit hours. This course is conducted in English. The teaching contents mainly cover five aspects, including a brief introduction to China; literature, religion and art; education, science and technology, sports; folk customs; and tourism.

Learning Assessment

The students of this Chinese culture course will be assessed based on: final written exam, assignments and attendance, accounting for 70%, 20%, and 10%, respectively, in the final results. Students qualified in the assessment will be issued a completion certificate of the short-term course of “Basic Chinese Language and Culture”.

Teaching Requirements

  • The instructors of the Chinese culture course shall have a degree in English, Chinese Language and Literature, or medicine, etc., have a good understanding of China and Chinese culture, and can conduct the courses in English. The instructors shall adjust the teaching methods and teaching progress based on the dynamic learning process of students.
  • The instructors of the Chinese culture course shall assign corresponding assignments after each class to mobilize students’ cultural learning interests.
  • The instructors of the Chinese culture course shall spread Chinese culture, not teach or disseminate contents unrelated to the teaching objectives or tasks in classes.
  • Participants shall strictly abide by Chinese laws as well as regulations of Anhui Medical University during online and offline classes.
